Cleveland Institute of Music

Classical music conservatory in University Circle

About the organization

The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) is an independent conservatory devoted to classical music performance, in Cleveland's University Circle. It opened on December 8, 1920, on Euclid Avenue, founded by members of the Fortnightly Musical Club with composer Ernest Bloch as its first musical director, and moved to its current home at 11021 East Boulevard in 1961.

CIM enrolls up to about 350 conservatory students and counts some 4,900 alumni; its faculty and alumni make up more than half of The Cleveland Orchestra. It calls itself the largest presenter of free performances, master classes and community concerts in the Midwest, with an estimated 600 events a year, most of them free and streamed. A preparatory division teaches younger musicians. Paul Hogle is president and CEO.
