About the organization
Refresh Collective is an Ohio nonprofit that uses hip-hop to help young people and adults heal, learn and build skills, with programs in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Its founder and executive director, Doc Harrill (aka Dee Jay Doc), an emcee, turntablist, producer and recording engineer for more than 30 years, started it in 2011 as a free neighborhood hip-hop summer camp. Its mission is to cultivate tomorrow's change-makers through self-expression and skill building rooted in hip-hop culture.
Its embedded studio classrooms and intensive songwriting and recording programs run in schools, after-school and summer camps, hospitals and recovery settings, using trauma-informed, therapeutic curriculum. Participants write, record and perform their own songs and music videos while building confidence and skills in music production, video and entrepreneurship. In 2025 its programs served 685 people and produced 121 creative works.
