The City Club of Cleveland

Nonpartisan civic free speech forum

About the organization

The City Club of Cleveland is one of the nation's oldest continuous independent free speech forums. Founded in 1912, in the Progressive Era, it is nonpartisan and takes no positions on issues. For more than a century its speakers, from sitting presidents to community activists, have answered unfiltered, unrehearsed questions directly from the audience. Its mission is to create conversations of consequence that help democracy thrive.

The City Club produces more than a hundred programs a year. The backbone is the Friday Forum, a luncheon program on significant national and regional issues, alongside forums at other times and places (neighborhood bars included), programs led by members and students, and candidate and issue debates every election season. Its primary media partner, Ideastream Public Media, broadcasts forums on WKSU and WVIZ/PBS. Dan Moulthrop has led it as CEO since 2013.
